OTC COVID Test Kits

Dispensing OTC COVID test kits is highly profitable for you, and your patients will appreciate it. Here’s a breakdown of the guidelines

  • Each individual patient can get up to 8 tests every 30 days
  • You do not need a prescription from a prescriber
  • There is no charge to the patient if covered by their insurance
  • For Medicare patients, bill them just like you do your vaccines to a medical biller
  • Most commercial plans will adjudicate online

To bill insurance, you need to document the patient wants the test kits. We have a patient attestation form you can use for patients and all family members. Keep this on file like you would a hardcopy prescription.

The pandemic benefits will end on May 11, 2023. This means that many patients will lose the valuable benefit of free OTC COVID tests. Use this urgency to get as many filled now as you can. Some patients, such as Medicaid patients, may continue to receive covered tests for no charge after this date.

I prefer the method where you ask every patient and encourage every patient. Ask if they want a free OTC COVID test. Even if you can’t bill their insurance, you can give them 1 test for free, so you fulfilled your promise of a free test.
